Kira’s Bedroom Makeover

by | Jun 7, 2022 | Home Decor Projects | 0 comments

Ready to update your bedroom?

Luckily, I have two amazing daughters that have been watching HGTV for YEARS – they love watching other people update or renovate rooms, or entire houses.  They have learned so much and have so many creative ideas swirling around in their heads.  I asked Kira and Kayla if they would like to update ‘their’ bedrooms in the new house and they both said “Yes”.  It was super fun watching them research ideas – and then go to work.  This first blog post will follow Kira as she updates ‘her’ bedroom in our house – I hope to add posts for the other two bedrooms later!

If you notice -there is a big ‘prow’ on the front of the house – with HUGE windows which I love – it brings in so much light – which I really need these days.  Kira’s bedroom is downstairs below the ‘prow’.  There is a den on the left side of the prow and a bedroom on the right side of the prow.  This was the first challenge – as the room is pretty small and a really weird shape.  If you look at the picture on the left hand side of the feature image at the top of the blog post – that is what the room looked like when we purchased the house.  The center picture is the totally remodeled room and the right picture is Kira touching up the feature wall – Now I’ll walk you through the steps to get there.

Updating ‘Kira’s’ Bedroom

Isn’t it funny how when you kids move out – you still designate a bedroom for them hoping they will come back often. ‘Kira’s bedroom’ is right below the great room in the upstairs – so the bedroom ‘fits’ on the east side of the ‘prow’ which makes the bedroom a really strange shape.  Kira’s bedroom had old ‘shag’ carpet – so that was the first thing to go.  Pat replaced it with a beautiful new wood floor – we used HomeLegend Wire Brushed Natural Hickory Engineered Hardwood click lock flooring from Home Depot – we absolutely love it!

old shag carpet needed to go

Kira’s bedroom had old ‘shag’ carpet – so that was the first thing to go.  Pat replaced it with a beautiful new wood floor – we used HomeLegend Wire Brushed Natural Hickory Engineered Hardwood click lock flooring from Home Depot – we absolutely love it!  It is one of those new ‘floating’ floors.  We put a waterproof layer down and then clicked it in place, but we found that it ‘squeaked’ a bit when you walk on it.  For the rest of the rooms where we replaced the carpet, we put down a really light weight ‘layer of foam’ as the waterproof layer and it is much ‘quieter’ now.  It was called Roberts AirGuard Premium Underlayment

Now for the BIG ‘design’ question – what to do with the accent wall?   That is the part she loves the most – getting creative!

Kira knows that I LOVE mountains, so she designed a mountain scene.  It’s fun to watch her creative process.  She typically starts in Adobe Illustrator where she sets the art board to be the exact size of the actual wall and then draws in the lines to create the design. Once she likes what’s in the computer she ends up ‘drawing’ the design on the wall – with long rulers and levels and pencils.  Once she finishes that – she stands back …. and makes changes to make it even better.

She decided to use wooden slats to create the mountain scene on the wall – so off to the hardware store to buy the stats.   Luckily they just barely fit in my Prius.

Next step – paint the slats – and of course we live in Colorado where there is typically a thundershower every afternoon.

She used   Snowbound from Sherwin Williams a really pretty white color for the ceiling and the slats.

She put painters tape on the wall where the wood slats would go to create the mountains and painted all the area under the painters Snowbound white  – and then painted the ‘sky’ (above the mountains) and the other three walls using Sherwin Williams Sea Salt – a really refreshing cool color – this photo doesn’t do it justice.

Then Kira and Zac put the white wood slats up on the wall to create the mountains.

Kira loves WHITE – so she repainted the closet doors and all the trim white – it really brightened the room.

We ordered two new lamps off Amazon  and I was amazed at how small the packages were that they came in – I could not image that two lamps with two lamp shades would fit in such small packages – but they did – and turned out really cute – they even have ‘outlet’s so you can plug in your phones at the base to recharge them at night.

She purchased new bedding and pillows to dress up the room.  The photos on the wall are pictures Kira took on our trip to Ireland many moons ago!

And … in case you were wondering what the four little girls were doing while their mom and dad were updating the bedroom –

Isn’t it amazing how interesting a large box can be …

So delighted with the new bedroom – thanks Kira and Zac!
